Walrus - Money Made Fun for Gen Z
about.
Walrus is a Bengaluru-based neobank founded in 2019 that set out to revolutionize how India’s teenagers and young adults manage money. When the founders approached me at the very beginning, their vision was clear to make financial literacy and independence exciting for Gen Z through a smart, social, and gamified digital experience.
I led the product design from the ground up, defining everything from the visual identity and UX flow to the motion language and product personality. The platform was built around a prepaid debit card for teens (in partnership with RBL Bank and backed by Mastercard) that could be used both online and offline, with powerful features like lock/unlock from the app and instant top-ups from parents.
Our goal was to craft a design that didn’t talk down to teens but spoke their language confident, bold, and expressive. Walrus targeted India’s 100 million+ teen market, aiming to create not just a wallet but a community and marketplace that celebrates youth, independence, and smart money habits.
challenge.
Designing for Gen Z is unlike designing for any other audience they’re digital natives with global taste, yet they’re still navigating early financial responsibility. Our early prototypes were full of vibrant colors and playful UI elements, but when we tested them, the feedback was eye-opening: teens found it too kiddish. They saw themselves as young adults and wanted a product that treated them with respect.
We pivoted quickly, evolving the design language into something refined yet expressive using bold typography, modern gradients, and confident tone while maintaining simplicity. From a UX standpoint, we introduced gamification wherever possible transaction rewards, streaks, progress milestones, and micro-interactions that made even simple actions feel rewarding.
At the same time, we ensured the experience stayed safe and transparent for parents. Parental controls, a notification center, and real-time visibility helped maintain trust. Designing this balance freedom for teens, control for parents was one of our toughest and most rewarding challenges.
We also gave the Scan & Pay feature a distinct Gen Z personality quick, social, and fun to use in public. And when Walrus launched its personalized Signature Cards, allowing teens to print their own signature on the card, we extended the same personalization spirit into the app experience letting users feel true ownership of their digital identity.
results.
The final product struck the perfect balance between youthful energy and maturity one that both teens and parents loved. The new design gave Walrus a strong visual and emotional identity, helping it stand out as one of India’s first teen-focused fintech brands.
The app quickly grew to over 200,000 registered users during its early growth phase, establishing Walrus as one of the most recognized names in youth banking. Its partnership with RBL Bank and Mastercard added credibility, while the personalized signature cards and gamified savings features made money management feel genuinely fun.
Teens described the new app as “something I’d show my friends,” and parents appreciated how secure and transparent it felt. The design helped Walrus evolve from a product into a lifestyle platform empowering Gen Z to manage money with confidence, responsibility, and style.
